»Clothes« (2007)

Praktisch rührungslos steht der Mann da, während eine junge Frau seine Krawatte ordnet, den Sitz seines Sakkos überprüft und ihn ausgehfertig macht. Er folgt allen Anweisungen, dreht sich, bückt sich, damit sein Hut abgenommen, ausgebeult und ihm schließlich wieder aufgesetzt werden kann. Das Video wurde aus dem Fenster eines höher gelegenen Stockwerks aufgenommen und beobachtet in voyeuristischer Weise eine private Szene, ein stilles Intermezzo voller Möglichkeiten. Der Oldtimer und der ländliche Sonntagsanzug verheißen einen bedeutenden Anlass. Doch dies ist der Moment des Übergangs vom privaten Raum zum Betreten der öffentlichen Bühne.

Die Performanz der Geschlechterrollen ist intim, familiär, pragmatisch und präzise. Sie konstruiert ihn wie ein Bild und er teilt, als es soweit ist, eine selbstbewusste Grimasse mit seiner Stylistin. Damit kommentiert er das unangenehme Missverhältnis zwischen ihm und seiner Kleidung, zwischen ihm und dem Charakter , den er darstellen soll.

»Clothes« ist Teil einer Werkserie, in der Sean Edwards (*1980) gefundene und zufällige Alltagssituationen filmt. Den filmischen Gegenstand setzt er jedes Mal zu den jeweiligen skulpturalen und physischen Eigenschaften in Beziehung: Materialien werden bearbeitet, Räume gebaut oder Oberflächen der letzte Schliff verpasst. Die Filme bringen Körper und Objekte auf eine Weise in Verbindung, die eine Beziehung zwischen der Betrachtung, der Herstellung sowie dem Ort von Skulpturen im Alltag hervorruft.

Sean Edwards (*1980, Cardiff) absolvierte einen MA in Skulptur an der Slade School of Art (2005). Zuletzt richteten der Kunstverein Freiburg, Freiburg (2012) Limoncello, London, Tanya Leighton, Berlin und Spike Island, Bristol (beide 2011) Einzelausstellungen des Künstlers aus. Zudem nahm er zuletzt an Gruppenausstellungen in der Zabludowicz Collection (2011), in der Wallspace Gallery, New York (beide 2010) und der Lisson Gallery, London (2009) teil. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Publiaktionen, unter anderem zuletzt »For Lal, or Henry«, The Block, London (2012) und »Maelfa«, Bedford Press, London (2011).

»Clothes« (2007)

A man stands passively while a young woman methodically straightens his tie, adjusts his jacket, makes him ready. He does as he is told, turning around, bending down to have his hat puffed, removed, replaced. The film is shot from an upstairs window and trespasses voyeuristically on a private moment of trust, a quiet interlude that is immanent with possibilities. The vintage car and rural »Sunday best« outfit points to a grand occasion, but this is the transitional moment between private space and a public stage.

The performativity of gender roles is intimate, familial, pragmatic and precise. She constructs him as an image and, when all is done, he shares a self-conscious funny face with his »dresser«, acknowledging the awkward gap between himself and the clothes he is wearing, between himself and the character he is being dressed to perform.

Clothes is part of a series of works in which Edwards films found, everyday, incidental situations. He frames the subject of each in relation to its sculptural and physical properties: manipulating materials, constructing space, and finishing a surface. The films set up relations between the body and the object in such a way that they evoke a connection to both making and looking at sculpture, and the place of the sculptural object or experience within daily life.
