Michael Stevenson: Tropical Economies
Michael Stevenson's Capp Street Project, entitled Tropical Economies, will take off from the artist's ongoing research into the history of the Moniac, a hydraulic machine devised in the 1950s for charting and calculating national income flows.
Stevenson plans to rescue or recreate a Moniac machine that was formerly used by the Central Bank of Guatemala and to employ this ruined relic as a pivotal artifact in an exhibition that explores the exporting of Western economic models to the developing world.
Based around the theme of a quest, and making reference to both Joseph Conrad and Robert Smithson, Stevenson's installation will explore slippages between cultural and economic theory.
