May 12x12 Features
Mike Andrews
DECADENT FIRST FRIDAYS

Seduced by color, texture, and oddly disparate materials, artist Mike Andrews creates intricate, web-like sculptures and yarn “monsters” in neon colors for the next 12 x 12: New Artists/New Work exhibition opening at First Fridays on May 5, 2006, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago. With ingenuity and wit, Andrews’s brightly-colored yarn shapes and blobs fill the space as both installation and modular, free-standing elements. Finger-woven and crocheted yarn covers the playful creatures that rest on the gallery floor.

Andrews’s work is inspired by the fiber crafts movement and the process of finger-woven designs. The flexible yarn sculptures also take cues from his drawings. Large, woven forms create a three-dimensional line drawing guiding the viewer through its web of neon colors, while challenging conventional perceptions of drawing.

Andrews received his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his MFA in sculpture at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. He currently teaches in the Fiber and Materials Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He leads a tour of his exhibition on Tuesday, May 16, 6:30 pm.

May’s "decadent" First Friday’s features chocolate samples from Translucent Chocolates and make-overs from Sephora make-up artists. Guests are invited to meet new friends at the popular iMac G5 digital dating bar while DJ Ron Sager provides music for the evening. There is an after party at Narcisse (710 N. Clark).
