short biography

Elaine Sturtevant (Sturtevant, b. 1926, Lakewood, Ohio, USA, d. 2014, Paris) is considered a pioneer of so-called "Appropriation Art" (she objected to this classification). She made replicas of works of the greatest colleagues, such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Paul McCarthy, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and thus leveraged the dogma of originality. In 2011 she was awarded at the Venice Biennale.
