Mark Tobey (b. 1890, Centerville, WI, USA, d. 1976, Basel, Switzerland) is known for his "White Writings", a network of calligraphically fine characters. In 1958 he participated at the Venice Biennale, and in 1959 and 1964 at documenta 1 and 3 in Kassel. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
