Eve Sussman’s 89 seconds at Alcázar 2004, is a video tableau inspired by Diego Velázquez’ famous painting Las Meninas 1656 held at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Shot using a Steadicam, the video is 360° take of a set in which Sussman reproduces in eighty-nine seconds the moments leading up to the portrait when the royal family and their courtiers came together in the exact configuration of Velázquez’ painting. For the making 89 Seconds at Alcázar, Sussman assembled a team of thirty-five including an architect, set designer, choreographer, costume designer, actors and actresses and a film crew. It was done in four days, but took over three years to realise.
