press release

Wallspace is pleased to present “Cataract,” a group show organized by the participating artists in collaboration with gallery directors Janine Foeller and Jane Hait.

The show Cataract came about as a relay amongst friends. The chain of events is something like this: Michael R speaks to Michael Q about similarities in our photographs and in the way we use the camera; Michael R mentions this to Erika V; Erika V discusses this with Shannon E; Shannon E jumps at opportunity for a show offered by J+J; Shannon enlists Michael Q and Nancy D; Talks begin about Jim W and the burden of pedagogy; Mark W is enlisted to write an essay as he is familiar with everyone’s work and is a mutual friend and artist; Negotiations regarding photography and medium begin; Michael Q and Nancy D surprise conference call Erika V and Shannon S; Discussions about a title for the show result; Arthur O is also recruited; A two hour conference call follows; Photography, now the elephant in the room, remains a heated topic; Nancy D emails a list of titles for the show and cataract is chosen as a way to deal with vision while excluding photography proper.

The exhibition will run from November 30th through January 6th, with an opening reception the evening of November 30th from 6 – 8pm. An essay by Los Angeles based artist Mark Wyse will accompany the exhibition. The gallery is located at 619 West 27th Street between 11th and 12th avenues in West Chelsea. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11-6pm.
