Reception for the artist and opening of the second leg of the exhibition Chance Encounters with the launch of Pablo Pijnappel’s 16mm film installation Walderedo (2006). Restaurante Jorge Americano (2008-2009) by Tim Braden and Press Release (2009) by Karin Schneider will remain on view through June 21.
Pablo Pijnappel was born in 1979 in Paris and lives in Berlin. He studied at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the SFAI in San Francisco and Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. Recent solo exhibitions include Juliètte Jongma, Amsterdam, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris, Carlier I Gebauer, Berlin, (all 2008) Museum de Hallen, Haarlem, NL and Whitechapel Laboratory, London (2007) and Galerie Iris Kadel, Karlsruhe (2004).
Friday May 29, in collaboration with Union Gaucha Productions, 7pm:
A screening of A Vida De Infra Tunga (1999), a 16mm film portrait of Brazilian artist Tunga by Karin Schneider and Nicolas Guagnini, followed by a conversation between Nicolas Guagnini and Luis Pérez-Oramas on the exhibition Tangled Alphabets: León Ferrari and Mira Schendel on view at The Museum of Modern Art, New York through June 15, 2009.
Nicolas Guagnini was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and lives in New York. Together with Karin Schneider, he runs the experimental film company Union Gaucha Productions since 1997 and was a co-founder of the cooperatively organized exhibition and event space Orchard (2005-2008). Recent solo exhibitions include COMA, Berlin (2009), Andrew Roth gallery, New York (2006 with Gareth James & 2007), Orchard gallery, NY (2006 with Dan Graham) and Printed Matter, NY (2004). His writing has been published in October, Parkett, Cabinet, Texte Zur Kunst, and several exhibition catalogues.
Luis Pérez-Oramas was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and currently lives in New York. He is a writer, a poet, and an art historian. He was Professor of Art History at the Université de Haute Bretagne-Rennes 2, Rennes, France (1987-1991); Ecole Régionale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Nantes, France (1992-1994); and at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas Armando Reverón, Caracas, Venezuela (1995-2002). Pérez-Oramas was a member of the Board of Directors at the National Gallery of Art of Venezuela (1995-2001) and Curator of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Caracas (1995-2002). In 2003 he became Adjunct Curator in the Department of Drawings at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Shortly thereafter, in December 2006, Pérez-Oramas was appointed The Estrellita Brodsky Curator of Latin American Art at MoMA. He is the curator of the exhibition Tangled Alphabets: León Ferrari and Mira Schendel on view at The Museum of Modern Art, New York through June 15, 2009.
