Cornelius Quabeck

Eine Achterbahn der Gefühle schlägt einem in den Bildern von Cornelius Quabeck entgegen und erweist sich als Strategie gegenüber dem Betrachter. Die Darstellung wirkt impulsiv und abrupt. Beunruhigend sind die Ausschließlichkeit der Zeichen und das fast Ruppige und Demonstrative: das Präzise und Sorgfältige der Darstellung ist durch das geradezu lässig Formlose wieder in Frage gestellt. Und der harte Strich trifft auf den weichen, nachgiebigen Grund. Die Farbe sinkt ohne Duktus in den Grund. Das Malerische dominiert; die Bilder sind hell und intensiv leuchtend, streckenweise fließen, verfließen die Farben. Erst allmählich erschließen sich die Titel, wirken dadurch umso geheimnisvoller, mithin wie ein Schlüssel zum Verständnis und wie eine über die Jahrhunderte tradierte Losung. Aber solche Bilder können nur heute entstehen. Das Psychedelische ist als Lebensgefühl präsent. Eine irritierende Direktheit korreliert mit der vielschichtigen Erzählung, dem Betrachter vor Augen.

Cornelius Quabeck's paintings confront the viewer with an emotional rollercoaster – a strategy devised by the artist. The representation is impulsive and abrupt. The exclusiveness of the signs and the almost gruff and demonstrative are rather disturbing: the quite casual amorphousness challenges the precise and diligent. And the hard line meets the soft canvas which absorbs the paint. The art of painting prevails; the paintings are bright and intensely luminous, sometimes the colours flow, even melt. Comprehension of the titles comes only gradually, increasing the mystery, like a key to understanding and like a century-old solution. But these paintings are only possible today. The attitude is psychedelic. The irritating straightforwardness correlates with the multi-layered story, right in front of our eyes.

Cornelius Quabeck has exhibited widely in Europe. Cornelius Quabeck (*1974) studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Dusseldorf and at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London.
