European works on paper spanning five centuries make up this display. Drawings include examples from the Museum's rich holdings in Carlo Maratti (1625–1713), a Roman baroque painter who drew religious subjects, portraits, and scenes from history and mythology. Also featured are British landscape watercolors demonstrating the development of the medium's expressive potential by artists such as John Robert Cozens (1752–1797), John White Abbott (1764–1851), John Sell Cotman (1782–1842), and John Constable (1776–1837).
Thematic groupings range from prints devoted to Christ as the Man of Sorrows by northerners such as Martin Schongauer (ca. 1435–1491) and the Monogrammist GZ (active ca. 1517–22), to Swiss and German military figures by Daniel Hopfer (ca. 1470–1536) and Hendrik Goltzius (1558–1617). Renaissance ornament designs created north and south of the Alps by Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) and Enea Vico (1523–1567) appear alongside mythological subjects drawn and engraved by sixteenth-century Italians including Rosso Fiorentino (1494–1540) and Giorgio Ghisi (ca. 1520–82). French seventeenth-century landscapes and views by Jacques Callot (1592–1635) and his contemporaries are complemented by prints by artists who anticipated or participated in Impressionism, such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875), Camille Pissarro (1830–1903), and Berthe Morisot (1841–95).
