Guy Ben-Ner: FLYING LESSONS

Guy Ben-Ner, 1969 in Ramat Gan geboren, vertrat Israel 2005 auf der Biennale von Venedig. Seine Filme zählten zu den Preisträgern der KunstFilmBiennale in Köln (2007) und den Internationalen Kurzfilmtagen in Oberhausen (2005) und wurden auf den Skulptur Projekten Münster 2007 und den Biennalen in Liverpool und Shanghai (2008) vorgestellt.

Gemeinsam mit seiner Familie dreht Ben-Ner seit 1999 überaus eigenwillige und skurrile Kurzfilme – teils in der heimischen Küche oder im Kinderzimmer produziert, teils in öffentlichen Parks in New York oder sogar bei IKEA aufgenommen.

Die Konrad Fischer Galerie präsentiert die beiden neuen Filme von Guy Ben-Ner: If only it was as easy to banish hunger by rubbing the belly as it is to masturbate und Drop the Monkey. Das Roadmovie If only it was... (2009), entstanden als Auftragsarbeit für das Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, handelt von der absurden Beziehung der beiden Protagonisten – Künstler und Museumsdirektor – zueinander und zitiert fast beiläufig berühmte Paar-Gestalten aus der Literatur: Don Quixote und Sancho Pansa, Wladimir und Estragon aus Warten auf Godot, Dante und Vergil aus der Göttlichen Komödie.

Drop the Monkey (2009) wurde als Auftragsarbeit für das New Yorker Performance-Festival PERFORMA produziert. Der Film ist als Dialog des Künstlers mit sich selbst angelegt – nur dass jeweils zwischen Rede und Gegenrede die Distanz zwischen Berlin und Tel Aviv zu überbrücken ist. Ohne nachträglichen Schnitt produziert, liegen zwischen den Telefonaten jeweils die tatsächlichen Flugreisen von Deutschland und Israel. Der Text selbst ist als Gedicht in hebräischer Sprache (mit englischen Untertiteln) verfasst. Die Grenzen zwischen Privatem und Öffentlichem, zwischen Kunst und Leben werden hier auf besonders eindrückliche Weise dargestellt.

Begleitend zur Ausstellung zeigt das Filmkunstkino BAMBI, Klosterstraße 38, 40211 Düsseldorf, Tel. 0211-356335, am Samstag, 3. Juli 2010 um 16.30 Uhr eine Mini-Retrospektive mit Filmen von Guy Ben-Ner aus den Jahren 1999 – 2003.

Guy Ben-Ners Videoinstallation Wild Boy (2004) wird noch bis Ende Oktober 2010 im Museum Ludwig, Köln, gezeigt. Die Kunsthalle Mainz widmet seinen Filmen ab dem 20. August 2010 eine Solo-Ausstellung.

Guy Ben-Ner, born 1969 at Ramat Gan, showed 2005 at the Israeli Pavilion at Venice Biennial. His award-winning shortfilms have been introduced at ArtFilmBiennial Cologne, at International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2005), at Skulptur Projekte Münster (2007) and at Biennials in Liverpool and Shanghai (2008).

Together with his family, the artist produces ideosyncratic and comical short films – partly shot at home in his kitchen or in the nursery, partly in public parks in New York City or even at IKEA stores.

Konrad Fischer Galerie proudly presents Ben-Ner’s latest films: If only it was as easy to banish hunger by rubbing the belly as it is to masturbate and Drop the Monkey. The road movie If only it was... (2009) - commissioned by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art – tells about a somewhat absurd relationship between the two protagonists – the artist and the museum director. Almost incidentally, famous couples in literature are quoted: Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa, Wladimir and Estragon, Dante and Virgil from the Divine Comedy.

Drop the Monkey (2009) has been commissioned by the New York performance festival PERFORMA. The „film performance“ is a dialogue of the artist with himself. But between speech and answer there is a real distance – the return flights back and forth from Berlin to Tel Aviv. The film has been continuously shot without any cuts. The script is written in form of a poem in Hebrew language (with English subtitles). The borderlines between public and private, between life and art are impressively debated in this short film.

Parallel to the show the Düsseldorf movie theatre BAMBI, Klosterstraße 38, 40211 Düsseldorf, Tel. 0211-356335 presents on Saturday, July 3, 2010, 4:30 pm a Mini-Retrospective of early Guy Ben-Ner films (1999 – 2003). Guy Ben-Ner’s video installation Wild Boy (2004) will be on show at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, until the end of October 2010. Kunsthalle Mainz will start a solo show of Guy Ben-Ner’s works on August 20, 2010.
