Ando Hiroshige (1797–1858), together with Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), created the most impressive landscapes of Japanese colour woodblock prints. In atmospheric scenes and often daring compositions, he depicted the countryside, towns and villages of his homeland in all their variety. He had a particular interest in representing the different seasons and times of day, and changing weather conditions. The ‘Sixty Provinces’ series which he created shortly before his death reflects Hiroshige’s mature understanding of the multiple possibilities of landscape interpretation which had become the main focus of his work.
