Le Charme discret d’un espace alternatif French version follows the English text.

Silver Flag is pleased to present an exhibition by Klaus Scherübel. Entitled “Le Charme discret d’un espace alternatif”, in reference to Luis Buñuel’s film from 1972, the show’s title addresses self-reflexively the notion of the alternative in regards to institutional structures as well as to current artistic practices.

Rooted in Conceptualism, Scherübel’s multi-disciplinary practice involves a systematic investigation of artistic activity and the role of the artist. Interested in issues of originality, authorship and forms of appropriation many of his realizations draw attention to the preservation of a certain history of ideas. Mainly known for his ongoing series “Untitled (The Artist at Work)” and his multi-layered projects dedicated to the conceptual enterprises of authors such as Stéphane Mallarmé and Jack Torrance, the exhibition at Silver Flag Projects features Scherübel’s ongoing, but only rarely exhibited, project “Monochrome Hobby Painting”, that he pursues since 1998.

Formally referring to a history of crises in 20th century painting (from Malevich and Rodchenko throughout Ad Reinhardt and Gerhard Richter), Scherübel’s “Monochrome Hobby Paintings” and his new video work of the same title are the experiment of superimposing two classical, yet fundamentally antithetic artistic programs: the radical pictorial gesture of the monochrome and the (utopian) project of integrating art into the practice of daily life (Lebenspraxis). Like in many of his projects, the æsthetic production of Scherübel’s “Hobby Paintings” is based on the contradictory relation between the visual appearance of the work (the codified image of the monochrome) and the title (Hobby Painting).

The realm of monochrome painting serves in the context of Scherübel’s conceptual practice as a field for a relaxing activity that seeks, like the historical avant-gardes did, to integrate “art into life”. Consequently, Scherübel’s monochromatic paintings are not anymore the result of a heroic act, but the trace of a manual, time-based, exercise, motivated by the mental requirements of his quotidian artistic labor.

Born in Austria, Klaus Scherübel works and lives in Montréal. His work has been recently presented at The Laurence Stern Trust, Coxwold (2010), Musée régional de Rimouski (2010), MoMA PS1, New York City (2009), S.M.A.K. Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent (2009), Galerie Erna Hécey, Brussels (2008), Generali Foundation, Vienna (2008), Fonderie Darling, Montréal (2008), Ursula Blickle-Stiftung, Unteröwisheim (2007), National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2006), Optica, Montréal (2005), Artspeak, Vancouver (2004), Printed Matter, New York (2004), Fundazió Juan Miró de Barcelone (2003), VOX – image contemporaine, Montréal (2002) and Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz (2001). The German, English, French and Dutch versions of his ongoing work Mallarmé, Le Livre were edited by Walther König (Cologne), Printed Matter (New York), Optica in collaboration with MUDAM (Montréal/Luxembourg) and MFC-Michèle Didier (Brussels). He is represented by Galerie Erna Hécey.
