Lukas Einsele. M85 – Fragments of a Cluster Bomb

M85 werden als Submunitionen in Artilleriegranaten oder Raketen vom Boden abgefeuert. M85 funktionieren auf zwei Weisen: zum einen durchdringt die Hohlladung der Submunition eine Stahlpanzerung, zum anderen entstehen bei der Explosion kleine Metallfragmente, die im Umkreis von bis zu 10 Metern tödliche Wirkung haben können. M85 ist klein und von zylindrischer Form. Sie ist die einzige bisher im Kampf eingesetzte Waffe ihrer Gattung, der so genannten Cluster- oder Streubomben, die über einen Selbstzerstörungsmechanismus verfügt. M85 wurden 2003 von Großbritannien im Irak eingesetzt, 2006 von Israel im Libanon, 2009 von Georgien gegen Russland und mutmaßlich 2011 von Thailand gegen Kambodscha.   Die Ausstellung »M85 – Fragments of a Cluster Bomb« versucht, die Flugbahn einer M85 zu rekonstruieren: vom Punkt, an dem die Streubombe aufschlug und dort explodierte oder als Blindgänger zurückblieb, bis zurück zu ihrem Ursprung. Tote oder verwundetete Zivilisten, Bauern, Sanitäter, Ärzte, Minenräumer, Soldaten, Politiker, Händler, Fabrikarbeiter, Ingenieure... Wer sind die Akteure und Individuen hinter, neben und vor der M85, wie ist ihr Verhältnis zu dieser Waffe und in welcher Beziehung stehen sie zueinander?

M85 are ground-launched bomblets, which can be dispensed from a variety of cluster munitions, including artillery cargo projectiles, mortars and rockets. The two functions of M85 are: to penetrate armour and to create fragmentation for an anti-personnel/anti-materiel effect. M85 are small and of cylindrical shape. M85 are the only bomblet containing a self destruct (SD) mechanism that have been used in combat; in 2003 by the United Kingdom in Iraq, and in 2006 by Israel in Lebanon, 2009 by Georgia against Russland, and presumably in 2011 by Thailand against Cambodia. 

The exhibition »M85 – Fragments of a Cluster Bomb« tries to  reconstruct the trajectory of M85: from a spot where they exploded (or not) back to their origins. Dead or wounded civilians, farmers, paramedics, surgeons, deminers, soldiers, politicians, dealers,  factory workers, engineers... Who are the individuals behind, besides, and in front of M85, and what is their relation to the weapon and to each other?
