press release

This stunning array of approximately 138 rarely seen works by major 20th-century avant-garde artists, including Constantin Brancusi, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Man Ray, were crucial to the emergence of modern art in America. The works, from Katherine Dreier’s Société Anonyme Collection of Yale University Art Gallery and those Dreier bequeathed to The Phillips Collection, include key modernist masterpieces such as Joseph Stella’s Brooklyn Bridge and Franz Marc’s Deer in the Forest I. Also featured will be noted Dada works including Man Ray’s Revolving Doors, an optical effect not seen since the 1920s. Special one-time events will demonstrate experiments in movement and light by Société Anonyme artists, such as the performance of Duchamp’s Rotary Glass Plates and Optical Disks, a motorized pinwheel that creates a moving picture.
