press release

Momentum - Nordic festival of contemporary art was organised for the very first time in Moss, Norway from May 23 — June 21, 1998.

The general purpose of Momentum 1998 was to create widespread interest in the world of visual arts, while stimulating appreciation of newer forms of artistic expressions. The pioneer-project was a success.

By visiting the WebPages of Ida Vesterdal Jørgensen (, curator-assistant during the 1998 Momentum-festival, you can still experience the Pakkhus exhibition.

In addition to the main exhibition Momentum had several other festival components; Momentum ‘98 International Art Conferences, Moment Design ’98 and ARTig, programme aimed especially at children and young people, are but a few examples of cultural initiatives that added colour to the town during the 1998 Momentum festival.

The concept of Momentum was conceived by a handful of town patriots in the autumn of 1994. As a result of the many years of constant effort of Gallery Brandstrup (today Gallery Henrik Gerner) and the previous directors of Gallery F15, the local inhabitants of the small community of Moss have acquired knowledge of the diversity and quality of work of artists from the Nordic countries.

“Pakkhus” the main exhibition during the 1998 Momentum festival was located in a former industrial building known as Central Pakkhus (Warehouse) in the downtown area of Moss. The main exhibition displayed the works of more than 40 artists. The unusual setting created an interaction between the building and the exhibited works of art. It contributed to broaden horizons and enhance critical judgement.
