press release

Over the past 30 years, the genre of installation art has experienced extraordinary growth. Conceived as an all-encompassing spatial experience, installations typically require entire rooms of their own, transferring the source of aesthetic experience from a discrete object to an environmental condition. Sitings traces the history of installation art through important works from MOCA’s permanent collection, placing emerging and established artists side by side to show the influence and vitality of this genre in contemporary art today. Included are works by Vito Acconci, John Bock, Dan Flavin, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Gabriel Orozco, Diana Thater, and Doug Wheeler, and new acquisitions that MOCA has never shown before. The exhibition is organized by Chief Curator Paul Schimmel and Assistant Curator Michael Darling.

Sitings: Installation Art 1969–2002 is made possible by the generous support of the Nimoy Fund for Emerging Artists. Additional support is provided by Donna and Howard Stone.
