press release

Viva l’Italia is the title of the exhibition curated by Fabio Cavallucci opening on 2 October 2009.

The show includes works from important galleries and private collections, as well as some that were made specially for the occasion. Viva l’Italia brings together works of artists with different cultural and stylistic backgrounds in order to convey an atmosphere: the uncertain, ambivalent atmosphere of present-day Italy, rather than adopting a specifically critical approach or investigating any particular line of art-history development. In a display that involves not just space but time as well, with a series of images and sounds, Italy is described through its symbolism, its legends and fears, through its signs of decadence, feelings of nostalgia, and precarious elements of innovation. A whole kaleidoscope of emotions are brought to life, portraying a hesitant nation which has lost its focus, where only shreds remain of its own important history. Everything is pervaded by an air of melancholy, and at times of cynicism.

Viva l’Italia is an exhibition full of suggestions that aims to prompt discussion and reflection, rather than offer an unequivocal point of view.

The exhibition includes works by: Rossella Biscotti, Maurizio Cattelan, Nemanja Cvijanovic, Luciano Fabro, Daniel Knorr, L’Epimeteide, Marcello Maloberti, Gian Marco Montesano, Gianni Motti, Cesare Pietroiusti, Leonardo Pivi, Costa Vece, and Sislej Xhafa.

The Viva l’Italia exhibition will be by a newspaper-format publication in which the voices of philosophers, politicians, sociologists, artists, and writers will tackle the subject of Italy, its history and future.

The exhibition is the first in a series entitled “Astuni Public Studio”. This is the project with which Galleria Enrico Astuni will be presenting events curated by some of the finest Italian and international critics. Held in the new premises that opened last January in Bologna, the initiative is not directly market-oriented, but rather aims to introduce a new approach to exhibitions, and a new way of communicating through art.
