Antonin Artaud (born 1896 in Marseille/France, died 1948 in Ivry-sur-Seine/France) was a draftsman, illustrator, poet, theater theorist and a Protagonist of European modernity. 1924-26 he directed the "Bureau of Surrealist Research"; 1935 he founded the "Theater of Cruelty"; 1936 he lived with the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico. He stayed nine years in psychiatric hospitals.
