Edgar Degas (Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, born 1834 in Paris, died 1917 in Paris) canceled his law studies at the Sorbonne and started an education under the painter Louis Lamothe, before he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was friends with Edouard Manet, Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir and participated at the Impressionist exhibitions in Paris. After 1886 he distanced from the Impressionist group and developed an independent own painting.
