Jonas Mekas

Jonas Mekas (b. 1922, Semeniskiai/Lithuania; d. 2019, Brooklyn/New York) was a a filmmaker, curator and poet, who lived in New York City. He worked with Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Salvador Dalí and George Maciunas amongst many others and was one of the most important figures of the New American Cinema and the American avant-garde. He was always on the road with his ready-to-use Bolex camera and regarded the diary as the central element of his extensive work.
In 1962 he co-founded the 'Film-makers' Cooperative', a group of freelance experimental filmmakers. He launched the Anthology Film Archives project, the world's largest collection of avant-garde film art. He was a lecturer in film studies at Cooper Union; at the New School for Social Research; at New York University and he was the founder of Film Culture magazine, wrote columns for 'The Village Voice'.
