short biography

Mari Katayama (b. 1987, Gunma, Japan) hatte bei ihrer Geburt die seltene Krankheit tibial hemimelia, that in Katayama’s case has prevented growth in the lower legs as well as in the left hand. Her struggle with this disease has inspired her to creativity at a young age. She started using her body as a canvas, painting tattoo-like designs on her prosthetics. She won the Tokyo Marunouchi Grand Prize Art Award and participated in the Aichi Triennale.
In 2019 she will take part in the 58th Venice Biennale.
