P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center invites young New York-based painters to pay homage to Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center presents After Matisse/Picasso, a parallel project to Matisse/Picasso, the landmark exhibition opening at The Museum of Modern Art on February 13. After Matisse Picasso offers New York-based painters the opportunity to address the legacy of these modern masters.

Participating artists were given a 16-by-20-inch stretched canvas on which to present their own interpretations of the work of Matisse and/or Picasso. Asking artists to use uniform-sized canvases, the project encourages creative responses rather than forgeries or imitations. The paintings will be exhibited in P.S.1's cafe for the duration of Matisse Picasso at MoMA QNS (February 13 to May 19, 2003).

In addition to the works in the café, P.S.1 anticipates that renowned New York-based painter Mike Bidlo will create oversized versions of a Matisse self-portrait and a Picasso self-portrait for a third floor gallery. P.S.1 will also use the works in the exhibition as a basis for a symposium this spring to encourage a lively dialogue between artists and art historians in New York.
