press release

Andreja Kuluncic (Croatia) bases her art on social projects, empowering local communities and citizens through new technology. Her most recent project, Distributive Justice, was conceived and developed for over 3 years with a group of social science experts. To encourage critical thinking about the distribution of public goods and services, she designed several platforms to enable public investigation: a computer installation about philosophical theories of distributive justice, short DVD clips with interviews of anonymous intellectuals from different countries, and a web-based game in which participants can distribute material and non-material goods at their own discretion, thus constructing a dynamically changing "society."

Fascinated by cultural difference between Eastern Europe and the US, Kuluncic will spend her residency at Art in General investigating how an emerging artist (such as herself) would enter the New York art world. She plans to identify key contacts to interview: art dealers, curators, commercial gallerists and other artists, in order to construct a "manual" for the East European artist, reminiscent of the popular Idiot’s Guides.

Andreja Kuluncic (1969, Subotica, former Yugoslavia; lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia). Kuluncic has been included in two recent exhibitions in the United States, The American Effect (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2003) and the on-line exhibition Translocations (The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, 2003). She has participated in large international exhibitions such as the 8th International Istanbul Biennale (Turkey, 2003), Documenta 11 (Kassel, Germany, 2002), and Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt/Main, 2002), and in numerous gallery and online exhibitions in Austria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, India and Italy,. Past artistic residencies include: The Walker Art Center (2003) and Artspace in Sydney, Australia (2002). Many of her projects are detailed on her website: http://www.andreja.org

Kuluncic is a participant in Art in General’s Eastern European Residency Exchange Program, a collaboration between four different contemporary art organizations in three European countries: Poland, Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Four New York artists will travel to a different European partner site while four residencies will bring Eastern European artists to Art in General. This four-year program was initiated by Art in General in September 2001 to foster a network of contemporary art venues and increase international visibility, exchange, and contacts among artists and arts organizations.

This residency program provides an opportunity for artists to create new work on-site in Art in General’s Gallery 4 (1,000 square ft exhibition space), and allows for continuing dialogue between artists and the public. It provides participating artists with many types of support, from help obtaining materials, to assistance in planning public programs. These include educational workshops, performances; slide lectures, discussions and informal gatherings. Selected resident artists are invited for an 8-10 week residency at Art in General, New York; receive a live/work studio or an apartment and a studio space in New York City; a fee to cover living expenses and materials while in residency; roundtrip airfare, and travel-health insurance.

The resident is also introduced to other artists and influential members of the community. The Program’s goal is to support artistic growth, encourage artistic dialogue; commission new work; provide a unique outreach program by supporting dynamic interactions between artists and the public; and build understanding between diverse cultures.

Andreja Kuluncic’s residency is made possible by the generous support of the Trust for Mutual Understanding and the Heathcote Art Foundation/FACE Croatia Program. The partner institution in Croatia is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art from Rijeka, Croatia.
