press release

Ann Lislegaard - Nothing But Space The exhibition Ann Lislegaard, "Nothing But Space" opened 22 June. The exhibition has been especially created for Kunstpassasjen by the artist Ann Lislegaard, and has as its point of departure her work "Nothing But Space" from 1997. This work challenges our conception of time and space. The artist has filmed her own studio; however, the room we observe has no straight lines and everything seems to be moving. What we see is not a straight film of the room, but the room seen through a mirror foil. The supple and wave shaped mirror reproduces the room in a distorted, "liquid" version. The objects and individuals moving through the room are stretched and bended in a way reminiscent of the mocking mirrors in an amusement park. This type of mirror is used by for instance the American space programme NASA when training their astronauts and preparing them for a state of weightlessness. Ann Lislegaard has adapted her work to Kunstpassasjen by creating a shift of time between the five different projections.

The Norwegian artist Ann Lislegaard (b. 1962) in her work examines the basic but at the same time complicated phenomena of space, time, identity and body. She expresses herself through medias like photo, video, text and installations. Lislegaard works and lives in New York and Copenhagen and represented Denmark in this year's Venice Biennale.

Kunstpassasjen (”the Art Arcade”) represents a new setting for national and international contemporary art. Located in the Oslo Metro, it starts near the passageway between the lobbies at Jernbanetorget Metro Station. The project is a joint venture involving the Oslo Metro Company, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art and Siemens AS.

Kunstpassasjen will be run as a pilot scheme for a year, but the intention is to turn it into a permanent exhibition area for shows of varying content and duration, but organized especially for this particular setting.
