press release

In her project The Room, Annette Merrild works systematically with photographs of rooms from blocks of flats in different countries. All the rooms in the same block of flats have been photographed from the same angle in a detached recording manner. Nobody is there; what we see is the frames of the lives being led there. The surroundings of the very poor and the very rich often constitute photographic subjects; but the focus is rarely on the life of the middle class. Together these several photographs paint a picture of overwhelming uniformity within the individual flats, but also of minor and yet surprising deviations from the norm.
