press release

This exhibition celebrates the lifelong partnership of one of this country's most respected artist couples: Anthony Caro and his wife Sheila Girling. In the park, Anthony will be exhibiting a selection of work from the 1970s, from the Flats series he produced at York Steel in Toronto following his first meeting with the American sculptor, David Smith. Many of these works have never before been exhibited in the UK. Sheila Girling will be showing a series of paintings in the gallery which use the qualities of pumice gel medium and acrylic paint to explore the rich colour and textures revealed by the weathering of architectural, such as walls and doors, in a variety of climates.

Anthony Caro had a retrospective at Tate Britain in 2005. During 2007 Anthony will be showing galvanised works at Annely Juda and will have a major show in New York. A particularly interesting project will be the creation of a number of works for the choir of war-torn 12th Century church in Beaubourg, France.

Sheila Girling's most recent solo exhibition took place in 2006 in Spain, at the Institut Valencia d'Art Modern that was accompanied by a catalogue. Lund Humphries will publish a new book about Sheila's work written by Hannah Westley in 2007/2008. This will be the first time the artists have exhibited together in ten years.

Catalogues will be available.
