Opening and summer party: Friday, June 2, 2017, 7 pm

In the early 1970s filmmaker Margaret Raspé (*1933) mounted a Super 8 camera on a construction helmet and documented her everyday activities, such as washing dishes, painting, and drawing. As an extension of the body, the camera records, whatever the artist is focusing on. In the projection of the film, viewers are forced to assume Raspé’s angle, they see and “move” with the artist.
The shift of perspectives and the alliance of humans and machines are starting points for the group exhibition APPARAT. Against this backdrop, Kunstverein Braunschweig presents a younger generation's interest in apparatuses and machines, working on it thematically and aesthetically or integrating it naturally into their artistic pratice. Starting with the camera helmet of a pre-digital time, to artificial intelligence, and automated drones, the exhibition considers multiple insights into the wide range of contemporary approaches to apparatuses: as a means of producing art, expanding human capabilities in the sense of a posthuman man-machine, and as an independent system, that creates its own narratives and immersive spaces.
