press release

The second exhibition in Modern Art Oxford\'s ARRIVALS series features the work of Slovenian artist, Miha Knific, for the first time in the UK.

Miha Knific works with photography and film; his subject matter explores the nature of photography as film, and film as photography. Interested in how we receive, understand and remember images, Knific’s current body of work juxtaposes text fragments siphoned from film scripts with photographs of real life scenarios. By rewriting the context for the photographs that he takes in a manner suggestive of photographic storyboards, Knific questions the foundations upon which stories are built and the reality of how narratives exist in time.

Knific will present a number of photographic / film works from his series Storyboards (2004). This exhibition will be followed by a short residency in Oxford during August, which will allow him to connect with specific artists groups and communities within the city, to talk about his working process and lead workshops.

Arrivals: New Art from the EU is a series of ten exhibitions over two years at Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary, Margate introducing the work of artists from the expanded European Union. The Arrivals series involves the collaboration of curators, critics and other cultural agents, resulting in exhibition production, artists’ residencies and an accompanying programme of talks and events.

Born in 1976 in Kranj, Slovenia, Miha Knific studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia from 1995 - 2000. He has exhibited at Gregor Podnar Gallery, Kranj, Slovenia (2004), Akademie der Kunste Berlin, Germany (2004), Villa Manin, Udine, Italy (2004) and Skuc Gallery, Ljubljana, Slovenia (2001),. The artist continues to live and work in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

This exhibition has been curated by Andrew Nairne, Director, Modern Art Oxford.
