press release

The group exhibition, “arthistory.com” features works by Nikos Alexiou, Nikos Giavropoulos, Georgia Damopoulou, Dimitris Zouroudis, Konstantin Kakanias, Lizzie Calliga, Haris Lambert, Miltos Manetas, Despoina Meimaroglou, Ilias Papailiakis, Tassos Pavlopoulos, Dimitris Tsoublekas and Lampros Psyrrakis.

The history of art has always been a resource for artists. In the past they often borrowed from other artists either to pay homage to them or to learn their techniques. The 17 th century artist Nicholas Poussin was inspired by the sculpture of Myron and included the classical work The Discus Thrower in his work The Crossing of the Red Sea. In the last century, Marcel Duchamp put a moustache on a postcard of the Mona Lisa.

The 13 artists in the exhibition re-examine works by Titian, Botticelli, Dürer, El Greco and many others through paintings, video and photographs. They reveal how the past can be a rich source of ideas that can be creatively re-interpreted in the present. By asking us to re-examine these works, the artists help us to understand not only the cultural values of the past but those of the present.
