Bas Zoontjens : Constructing In Reverse

The paintings are built up around unearthly geometric shapes in sloping landscapes or dark spaces. The continual tension between the slopes and spaces, the growth and the geometry are the fuel for my paintings. Sometimes the buildings and intersections are realistic; and have a science fiction "feel", sometimes they seem to evaporate in a compositional game of perspective lines and coloured areas. A play on construction and deconstruction, on coherence and incoherence. By mixing abstract and figurative forms, i create landscapes that teeter on the brink of becoming nightmares. Sceneries that might have been discovered by an accidental tourist.
