Bidibidobidiboo

The exhibition entitled Bidibidobidiboo. Works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, curated by Francesco Bonami, will feature major works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo contemporary art collection, which reflects the art scene of the last two decades. The exhibition will be installed in three sites in and around Turin: the Fondazione’s centre for contemporary art opened in 2002 in Turin, the Fondazione’s original gallery at the historic villa Palazzo Re Rebaudengo in Guarene d’Alba, along with a further space at the ancient Royal stables, la Cavallerizza, in the historic centre of Turin.

The exhibitions will range in media from installation, photography, painting, video, and sculpture, featuring 150 artists in all.

The Italian contemporary art foundation Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, founded in 1995 by the contemporary art collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and directed by Francesco Bonami, set up its first gallery at the Palazzo Re Rebaudengo in Guarene d’Alba, a small town just outside Turin, in 1997. History was made in the following years in the small town of Guarene with some of today’s hottest international artists passing through to make up a rich exhibition programme as well as the last five editions of the art prize Premio Regione Piemonte, featuring the likes of Doug Aitken, Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio Cattelan and Shirin Neshat. The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo have since produced a range of exhibitions including L.A.Times in 1998; Sogni/Dreams in 1999 at the Biennale di Venezia; Common People - the Brit Art project in 1999; Identidades Futuras: Reflejos de una Colección for ARCO Mardid in 2002; New Ocean by Doug Aitken in 2003; How latitudes become Forms: Art in a Global age in 2003; Carol Rama and Non Toccare la Donna Bianca in 2004 – as well as presenting a host of exhibitions that have come from coprojects with other international art institutions such as the Hara Museum in Tokyo, the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis and the Baltic Mill in Gateshead.

In September 2002, the Fondazione officially opened its new headquarters, a centre for contemporary art in Turin.

The space in Turin was designed by the Italian London-based architect Claudio Silvestrin and has a gallery of over 1,500 square metres, plus a book shop, auditorium, workshop area, cafeteria and restaurant. The new space is a flexible structure that can put together exhibitions quickly and efficiently to respond to today’s trends. A range of activities and events (films, talks, music, theatre and dance) are organised parallel to all the main exhibitions, whereby audiences can enjoy, interact and gain greater understanding of the centre and of contemporary art.

The exhibitions of the collection, all under the umbrella name Bidibidobidiboo. Works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, will be open to the public from 1 June to 2 October 2005.

Artistic Director of the Fondazione Francesco Bonami and Village Voice art critic Jerry Saltz, will hold a special talk and debate about ‘what matters in art: collecting, showing and writing’ on Monday 13 June at the centre in Via Modane 16 at 11am.

A full colour catalogue illustrating the collection and with texts by Francesco Bonami will be published by Skira (Milan) for June 2005.
