press release

Both artists have gained recognition in recent years with work largely based on their respective drawing practices, although these often give rise to installations and objects. While different in many ways, the work of both artists frequently combines a range of drawing methods from primitive to technological.

Among other projects, Simon Faithfull, has developed a practice primarily using a palm pilot as a sketch pad, allowing him to quickly record the world around him - often the most immediate subjects which offer themselves -such as traffic and commercial signs and signposts, architecture, skylines, vehicles, his dog, people etc. These drawings are then processed and produced on vinyl, plastic, glass or paper, or sometimes made available by e-mail subscription. In some recent pieces, Faithfull has experimented with blowing up the scale of the palm pilot pixels making their subjects more ambiguous in near abstract configurations, which nevertheless represent observational drawings. Bruno Peinado also draws from the immediate world around him, but he is more eclectic with his choice of subject matter. His interest lies in the plethora of imagery, which assails us from the many facets of popular culture. He is ultimately involved in regurgitating / repackaging this imagery so that it ricochets back at us from within the contemporary art context. One extreme example is the sculpture "The Big One World", (2000), Peinado's famous black Michelin man, which in many ways is the torchbearer of his artistic stance. Wall drawings, stickers, packs of cards, plastic bags as well as drawings, prints, posters etc., are all good for the presentation and / or commodifying of the objects of Peinado's appetite for images and the potential of their meaning.

Bruno Peinado has most recently been a resident of the international studios at PS1, where he also exhibited this year. He is currently participating in the Montreal Biennial, and has recently shown his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Marseille, and the new Palais de Tokyo exhibition space in Paris.

Simon Faithfull, who works in London, had exhibitions in 2002 at Transit Space, London and Veemvloer Gallery, Amsterdam. In recent years, his work has been shown at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, Camden Arts Centre and Chisenhale Gallery in London, as well as at Parker's Box, in the exhibition "Drawing Quirks", (2001).
