CHAOS/CONTROL – Occupy the room
BRIDGES photography project Emscher future

Abandoned industrial sites become urban highlights, former no-go areas become adventurer’s playgrounds - the urban area in our region changes its face. The rebuilding of the Emscher is going to sustainably change the living and working conditions in the entire Emscher valley. This process of transformation, covering a whole region, is accompanied by the BRIDGES photography project Emscher future by the Emschergenossenschaft. The rebuilding of the Emscher advances day by day, the changes which the Emscher and her tributaries are undergoing is met overly positive by the residents. They change the profile of the (river) landscape, they are manifestation for a new understanding of city and country and act as instigators for innovative projects. Room for manifestation of new lifestyles among consumption, culture, spare time and experiencing nature is created. Through the current and coming utilization of the adjacent stretches of land at the Emscher, new areas for possibilities and experimenting present themselves and offer an unique chance to participate and create. Photography can give voice to wishes, memories and visions hiding inside the water-supply-related and technical dimensions of change. It can document, focus, comment and mediate. The different photographical positions of the BRIDGES collection reflect the distinctiveness and potentials of the Emscher region and illustrate, especially in their entirety, the processes of change that are happening. From May 30th to July 12th, 2015, the photographs, which will find their way into the BRIDGES collection in 2015 can be seen within the frame of the exhibition “CHAOS/CONTROL – occupy the room.” Alongside the two award-winning sequences, there will be a conceptual work about the appeal “SUSTAIN/ABILITY – ideal and plan” as well as four commissioned works that deal openly with typical aspects of everyday life in our region in the sense of authorial photography, as for example allotment gardens and gardening or leisure time at the Emscher, on show.
