Christian Holstad’s art expresses the emotional underpinnings of everyday life with, poetic reflections on love, loss and nostalgia. Holstad’s new large-scale installation combines drawings, soft sculptures, and a transformed jukebox to convey the transitory nature of reality. Sculptures of donkeys fabricated from recycled shredded clothing and inspired by the artist’s childhood memories of nativity scenes, surround a working jukebox covered in yellow wool that transmits ballads by prominent female singers. The artist’s “Eraserhead” series consist of drawings of newspaper images that have been altered, leaving in their place blank, haunting suggestions of forms. To these Holstad adds drawn elements, poetically dramatizing human features both imaged and real. This is Christian Holstad’s first-solo museum show in the U.S. It is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by MOCA Director Bonnie Clearwater.
