press release

For her first solo project in Ireland, Tacita Dean has been commissioned by Cork 2005 to undertake a major new work in response to the city of Cork. Tacita Dean uses a variety of media; photography, drawing, sound and 16mm film to explore her chosen subject matter, which has included abandoned architectural relics, fleeting natural phenomena and the stories and memories of extraordinary characters. While grounded in reality, Dean's work looks beyond the material to imagined histories, the shifting nature of time and a search for the indefinable. Dean will spend a concentrated period of time in Cork, focusing in particular on South Presentation Convent, where she will develop a new work involving both film and site specific installation.
