press release

We are delighted to be able to introduce the young Irish painter, David O'Kane, as a new artist at the Filipp Rosbach Gallery with his solo exhibition “Dissection”.

David O'Kane comes from an Irish family of artists (his mother is a sculptor, his father a painter) and he has already exhibited with his two brothers, Eamon and Matthew, who are also both painters. He is not only comfortable with painting, rather he also produces Animation and Film. His talent has been confirmed with numerous scholarships and awards. Recently David O'Kane received the prestigious Derek Hill Foundation Scholarship and Residency at the British School at Rome. He wrote his theoretical thesis at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig about Michaël Borremans and Neo Rauch, with emphasis on their approach to painting and some particularly important theoretical issues pertaining to their work. Not bad role models for a young painter who is currently establishing his own practice.

Experiments with the symbolic power of nature. Aidan Dunne wrote in The Irish Times: “Magic is relevant to O'Kane's work as well, though in a more mischievous, subversive way. He is forever undercutting any notion of the real, first positing and then dispensing with apparently straight-laced representations. Like the earliest cinematographers, he relishes film's ability to cheat the mechanics of perception in his video animations. He cites Baudrillard, the cultural theorist who argued that we live increasingly in a world of simulacra, of depthless signs, remote from any imagined reality. O'Kane develops a coherent body of motifs, from the idea of a prototypical metaphysical interior to the use of paper as a symbol of knowledge, inquiry and representation. His paintings are intriguing ….” David O’Kane b. 1985, Ireland 2009 Diploma (with Distinction), Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, Germany, under professor Neo Rauch 2002–2006 Bachelor of Art Degree (1st Class Honours), Joint Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting and History of Art, The National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland
