press release

Perspectives: 153: Demetrius Oliver is the first solo museum exhibition for Demetrius Oliver, a Houston-based artist who creates work in a variety of disciplines, including performance, photography, and sculpture. Oliver engages the viewer through his use of historical and cultural references: in a series of photographs, for example, he uses his body to animate literary texts by Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, and Walt Whitman. Complex in meaning and context, Oliver’s conceptually based work is as visually eloquent as the written words it incorporates.

Perspectives 153: Demetrius Oliver is organized by Contemporary Arts Museum Houston Associate Curator Valerie Cassel Oliver, and will be accompanied by a Perspectives-format catalogue with an essay by Cassel Oliver, reproductions of exhibited work, and documentation on the artist’s career.
