press release

Douglas Gordon is one of the most prominent artists of his generation. Using both appropriated and original material to explore themes such as temptation and fear, life and death, good and evil, and innocence and guilt, he sucks the viewer into a world simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar, where everyone is implicated in a shifting assessment of the mutability of human nature.

Gordon is known for his sensitivity to space and his creativity in reconfiguring both his work and the places in which it is shown to create a unique sensory experience. Often epic in scale, his work encompasses film, photography, installation, text and sound. This, his first major solo exhibition in London, will include brand new work alongside work not yet seen in this country, as well as more familiar pieces, in an installation specially designed by the artist to take advantage of the Hayward’s distinctive spaces.
