e v+ a 2006 Give(a)way

The 30th exhibition of visual+ art, e v+ a (open & invited), will bear the personal hallmark of independent curator and writer Katerina Gregos, who has agreed to curate this year’s show. After three decades in existence, the 30th exhibition promises to be a truly global event with over 100 artworks and projects involving over 70 artists from 25 countries, many of which have been specially commissioned to make new work or develop new projects for e v+ a 2006.

Since the first exhibition in 1976, e v+ a is now regarded as Ireland’s premier annual exhibition of contemporary art and has grown to occupy a position of note and influence in the international arts calendar, attracting emerging and established artists and a succession of highly respected international curators.

e v+ a 2006 which is entitled Give(a)way will be based on ideas of generosity, sharing, communication, social interaction and exchange. It will adopt a community oriented and civic minded approach and, by extent, a stance that is critical of today’s neo-liberalist culture that puts self-interest and capital gains above human considerations. The exhibition will be motivated by a desire to create situations of connection and exchange within the city of Limerick. It will activate and involve local arts organizations and community groups. In that sense, it will be an exhibition for the city and maybe about the city, although not exclusively so. The focus of e v+ a 2006 will be on the specificity of the local context, as seen by the local and international invited artists, within the proposed conceptual framework. The exhibition will explore the notion of generosity, but not in the strict sense of the word which limits an interpretation of genrosity to economi c acts of charity or philanthropy. Rather, this exhibition will be based on the expanded idea of generosity: upon ideas of sharing, giving, creating situations of local interaction and dialogue, and imagining possibilities for a better future.

e v+ a 2006 looks upon the act of giving as an experiment in alleviating alienation from the community or the city but also invites the artists to propose their alternative visions of generosity.

e v+ a 2006 will focus on the local situation and problematics and attempt, in line with the notion of generosity, to put back something into the city while engaging with its social and cultural infrastructure. Limerick, although a small city of 80.000 inhabitants, boasts an unusually large number of high quality cultural institutions. e v+ a 2006 will take place in and actively involve all these organisations.
