press release

Hadassah Emmerich (The Netherlands, 1974) works out her concept in two parts. In Le Cercle Infernal Part II Hadassah Emmerich again takes on the role of curator and continues her visual journey through time with the film 2001: A Space Odyssey and the work of Francis Picabia as her sources of inspiration. Le Cercle Infernal is an ode to the freedom of placing various historical, cultural, and eclectic lines parallel to and in intersection with one another.

In part I Emmerich chose the work of Veronica Brovall (Sweden, 1975) and Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez (Costa Rica, 1974), who lent support to her concept with their sculptures. As curator, Emmerich devotes a platform to the work of Dafni Barbageorgopoulou in the second part of this exhibition.

Barbageorgopoulou explores the physical and metaphysical limits of space. The memories of her dreams during her travels are the primary building blocks of her work. She has the spatial and temporal transitions that occur during her travels correspond with the non-linear and organic growth processes of geometric patterns and the repetition of structures in her tapestries and other works. This dovetails with the intuitive transition from her memories to the act of making a work of art. Sometimes her work seems to resemble applied art and at other times to lean more towards architecture. Barbageorgopoulou’s work is characterized by a powerful combination of different ideas, disciplines and genres from a wide cultural spectrum; the viewer can even detect Cycladic art or influences by Mexican art in her work. This wealth of forms, ideas, and influences makes her work closely related to Hadassah Emmerich's.

Dafni Barbageorgopoulou was born in Johannesburg in 1977 and now lives and works in Berlin. She studied sculpture at the Athens Fine Arts Academy (BFA) and at the Royal College of Arts in London (MA, 2006). At this time Barbageorgopoulou is a guest at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.

Hadassah Emmerich graduated in 2005 from Goldsmiths College, London. She participated in Be[com]ing Dutch at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven in 2008, and had solo exhibitions in Salon Galeria Kordegarda in Warsaw (PL) and Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. In 2010 Emmerich will participate in the group exhibition ‘Global Design’ in the Museum Für Gestaltung in Zurich, the ‘14th Painting Triennale in Vilnius’, and the ‘Baltic Bienale’ in St. Petersburg. Her solo exhibition, 'La Charmeuse de Serpents' can be seen at this time in Hendershot Gallery, New York, and in October of this year a solo exhibition will also be held at the Palais für Aktuelle Kunst in Gluckstadt, Germany.
