press release

Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) is a German sculptor, printmaker and playwright to represent twentieth century German art. Barlach sought to depict people who endured hardship of life such as gpoverty,h gwarh and gdeath as well as their undefeatable hope to live throughout his career and realized them with his substantial and simple style. The manifestation of strong emotion and sturdy plasticity are the characteristics of German Expressionism but at the same time his works are filled with a sense of deep meditation which appeals to our hearts. The Exhibition, consisting of 180 works, includes 57 sculpture (including wood carvings), 76 drawings, 36 prints and materials. A retrospective exhibition introduces the entire scope of Barlachfs art for the first time in Japan.
