press release

Psychedelic minimalism, the history of giant hogweed and the Three Graces interpreted with the help of a fountain, mint on the steps, sugar water on the facade and a bookshelf that talks back!

This year it is ten years since GL STRAND began working together with the Royal Danish Art Academy and School of Visual Arts. Works and projects of graduate students are presented in an annual exhibition and this years Exit is a panorama of the current tendencies within painting, video, photography, sculpture, graphics, digital animation and installations created by 35 artists.

In the intimate surroundings of GL STRAND, it’s possible to get an overview of new Danish art – a rare occurrence for gallery owners, collectors, critics, curators and art lovers alike. Everyone’s a critic, including GL STRAND itself as we invest in chosen works which are then given away to members in a lottery.

For the artists at Exit 06, it is not just art that provides inspiration but also GL STRAND’s architecture. Jesper Aabille has converted the staircase to a mint garden, based on the idea of democratising art. Kristoffer Akselbo uses art to create ‘surprise attacks’; his interactive bookshelf in the bookshop of GL STRAND interacts with the public and complains when there is no one to talk to. Jens Hultquist’s performance ‘GL STRAND painted over/facialised’ goes head to head with the gallery itself. As a critic of how art institutions and collectors are less focused on the content in order to make art more digestible, the facade of GL STRAND is sprayed with sugar water.

Other works comments on the world around us: in her video installation, Nanna Debois Buhl dramatises introduction of giant hogweed to Denmark as an allegory of how we relate to the future. Modern lifestyle and hybrid consumer patterns are the focus of Maiken Bent who has created a kitchen island where domesticities and a pornographic aesthetic form a synthesis. Ismar Cirkinagic makes the terror of war more immediate by exhibiting photos from Bosnian mass graves and hay bales made from grass that is raked over them.
