Fiona Tan: Mirror Maker

Fiona Tan is one of the most distinctive contemporary artists working in film and video. Her work moves between documentation and fiction, biography and fantasy – based on the realization that the camera is not a neutral instrument of recording. Rather it is an agent provocateur whose presence encourages and produces reactions in the filmed subjects. Fiona Tan’s works are always portraits of individuals and groups from different cultural backgrounds and different social strata. Her interest in filmed images of people is accompanied by a fundamental doubt concerning the ability of the medium to bear objective, documentary wittness. When Tan uses archival, historical and ethnographic fim material in her works, she thus reveals the colonial perspective of a medium that claims to give authentic documentation of reality.

The exhibition is the first Danish solo-presentation of Fiona Tan. It includes about ten works dating from the last eight years.
