press release

The Fondation Louis Vuitton is a cultural and artistic complex which opened in Paris, France in October 2014 as part of a new artistic initiative by the LVMH Group. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, who won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989, the Fondation Louis Vuitton aims to promote and support contemporary artistic creation for a wide international audience. The 14th exhibition by Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo is “Fondation Louis Vuitton Building in Paris by Frank Gehry,” the first event of the “Beyond-the-Walls” project in collaboration with the new Fondation Louis Vuitton. This exhibition, originally planned and hosted by the Fondation in Paris in 2014 as its opening exhibition, has travelled via Beijing to Tokyo. Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo now hosts its renewed adapted version.

This exhibition, based on the themes of Frank Gehry and the Fondation architecture project, reviews the entire process by which Gehry created the concept of the Fondation as a “grand sailing ship symbolizing France’s deep sense of cultural mission”, from the first sketches to the completed building. Through architectural models as well as videos showing the diverse range of state-of-the-art technologies used through the completion of the building, it provides an overview of the entire project, which is celebrating the first anniversary of its completion. Also featured are exterior views filmed using drones, and the artistic activities in which the Fondation has already played a pivotal role. All of these elements are combined into a single installation, taking maximum advantage of the brightly lit space and structure of Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo. We invite you to come experience a new worldview created by the harmony between Frank Gehry’s bold, creative architecture and the Tokyo skyline as seen from Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo.

Based on the Paris exhibition proposed by LVMH Moët Hennesy – Louis Vuitton Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault, this exhibition has been organized with the cooperation of Gehry Partners LLP, the Scientific Advisor Sébastien Cherruet, Louis Vuitton Malletier, and Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo.
