press release

This retrospective of the work of German painter Gerhard Richter pays tribute to one of the most important living artists – one more in the Centre Pompidou’s series of monographic exhibitions devoted to the great figures of modern and contemporary art. With more than 130 paintings, the exhibition surveys the whole of Richter’s work from the 1960s to today. The Paris edition of this touring show brings together masterpieces that are recognised landmarks in the history of painting (Ema, Nude on a Staircase, 1964, Betty, 1988, September, 2005). It will also focus on lesser known aspects of the artist’s oeuvre, such as his work on grey, with mirror and glass, and his intimiste paintings. Finally, it highlights the extreme tension between the figuration and abstraction which, at the heart of his work, come to fuse together for the first time in painting.

The exhibition is co-produced by Tate Modern, London, and the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin.
