press release

This is the first exhibition in the UK of the work of Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist (1862-1944) who is considered one of the first true 'moderns'. Her paintings anticipate the dynamic paintings of Kandinsky and Francis Picabia as well as the iconic text works of Ed Ruscha. She made her symbolist-style paintings in secret, stipulating that they not be exhibited until 20 years after her death, a suggestion that she appreciated being ahead of her time. Her interests in drawings and painting resonate with many artists working today.
