I Repeat Myself When Under Stress

I Repeat Myself When Under Stress offers a look at some of the strategies of repetition that artists use today to meet the demands of history and the feeling of impotence that many experience in the light of growing economic destabilization and the permanent state of war in various parts of the world.

The exhibition is presented in a single darkened hall where the interweaving of the different artistic positions is allowed. Tris Vonna-Michell presents fragments of studio walls where slides of Detroit's cityscape are projected. His haptic visual journey is accompanied by several narrations – some personal, some appropriated, some about Detroit, others not. Hans Schabus displays a model train that was formerly installed in his studio in Vienna, retracing the studio boundaries over and over again in the cavernous space of MOCAD. Ceal Floyer's mesmerizing projections duplicate simple phenomena in durational time while destabilizing literal meaning.

I Repeat Myself When Under Stress is a collaboration of Siemens Arts Program and Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, curated by Trevor Smith and Thomas Trummer.
