press release

Curator’s Office is pleased to announce an exhibition curated by artist Tim Rollins of Tim Rollins + K.O.S. Entitled Intuition Box, after the title of a multiple on view by Joseph Beuys, this project brings together works by major twentieth and emerging twenty-first century artists. Tim Rollins is internationally known for his work with the art collective, K.O.S. (Kids of Survival). He is also an avid curator, writer, and collector. Rollins says, “As an artist and collector, I'm most excited and moved by works of art that, at face value, have absolutely no reason to exist. Yet these things do come into being despite it all - again, again and again. This exhibition affirms the substance of things not seen. I take these works as acts of faith and intuition made material.”

Curator’s Office micro-gallery has been described as a tiny jewel box setting for important and innovative international contemporary art. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, sculpture and video. It is installed salon style to release each work’s idiosyncrasies and make connections to others. Critic Mark Godfrey writes in the May 2005 Artforum how frequently an artist’s curatorial approach “never reduces the choices to bullet points in a curatorial argument. Institutionally affiliated curators might be inspired by but also envious of this tack, for though they may like to curate in this way, they have to answer to directors and education departments, marketing managers who seek big ideas, buzzwords, and selling points. All this means that institutions rarely sanction shows with such juxtapositions - which seem as utterly necessary, motivated by something in each of the works, as they are subjective. It also explains why more and more curators are inviting artists to put together exhibitions. Artists have the license they crave: Intuition, after all, is in their job description.”
