press release

This pairing of work by Australian artist Jan Nelson and Dutch artist Liza May Post represents the third in the MCA’s series of exhibitions that present the work of an Australian artist alongside that of an international peer. Jan Nelson is an established Australian artist who works across photography, performance, painting, video, sculpture and installation. Nelson’s psychologically charged works explore the gaps between speech and act, youth and maturity, isolation and inclusion. Her highly detailed paintings present immaculately finished images of singular figures – young people viewed from different angles, and often looking down or away from us. Like Nelson, Post’s practice incorporates photography and film and video installations. Exploring issues of alienation and vulnerability, her work, as with Nelson’s, focuses on the human figure almost always introverted or turned away from the world around it. Included in the exhibition will be a number of paintings from Nelson’s recent series Walking in Tall Grass, as well as major new photographic works and life-size sculptures. Post will present a suite of recent film and photographic works including the film While, which was created for the 2001 Venice Biennale – in which she represented The Netherlands. Pressetext
